Story and Photos by Dick Evers
It was a clear, cool day with gusty winds at the Nassau County Veterans Day service, on Sunday, Oct. 7, but soldier hearts still beat warmly with the memories of service nobly done. Eisenhower Park Memorial area was thronged with a large assembly of war veterans organizations and family members.
The stirring event of tribute was sponsored by the United Veteran Organization of Nassau County. Among numerous patriotic program moments, one of the most poignant was the unveiling of a large bronze replica of the flag raising on Iwo Jima during World War II. George Lang, US Army Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who was raised in Hicksville, was the focus of all eyes as he unveiled the monument. Present among the Marine veterans who fought on Iwo Jima was Hicksville attorney, long-time Democratic party leader, George O'Haire, Esq.
Speakers for the occasion of fervor and remembrance were: the Honorable Carolyn McCarthy of the US Congress; Nassau County Executive Thomas Gulotta in one of his great oratorical moments; Rabbi Morton Pomarantz, who delivered the Invocation; Angelo Ciotta, Iwo Jima Survivors Association; Colonel Paul Allen, commanding officer, 1st Marine Corps District; Gary Gerth, director Nassau Veterans Services Agency, and Monsignor Paul Bradley, US Navy, retired, who offered the closing Benediction.
Present with a spriteful medley of patriotic tunes and song were the ladies of the NY State Ms. Senior American Steppers; whose charming members are all over-60.
