Hicksville's offense came out strong again when playing their homecoming game against Plainview. They had a total of 286 yards as Jeremy Kyrkostas rambled off 114 yards on 13 carries, including a 53-yard touchdown run.
Rob Dwyer caught a 39-yard touchdown pass as he totaled 80 yards on the day. Shaun Lyons, the quarterback, carried the ball three times for 45 yards and completed four of eight passes. Chris Martinez, who ran for 35 yards on 11 carries, scored on a four-yard touchdown run.
Sean Curran, who replaced Shaun Lyons over center, connected with Matt Luyster for a 12-yard completion. Brian Krummenacker nailed two of three extra points.
According to coaches, the offensive line was a key in opening up the team's running game. Bobby Becker, Joe Diffendale, Jason Gonzalez, Bruce Moreno, Eugen Pietzak and Ryan Walker consistently opened holes in the Plainview defense for the running game to exploit.
The Comets defense shut down the Hawks, never letting them get closer than the 35-yard line. Howie Sham led the way with nine tackles and an interception; Joe Diffendale had seven tackles and knocked down a pass; Chris Martiniz had five tackles and an interception; Burce Moreno had three tackles and two fumble recoveries; and Vinny LaGrega posted a sack.
The team's next game is at Baldwin High School on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 1:30 p.m. The Junior Varsity also beat Plainview by a score of 26-12.
