The Hicksville Comets Varsity Football team started off the season with a glorious win against Valley Stream Central High School with the offense getting a total of 422 yards.
Quarterback Shaun Lyons rushed for 123 yards, Chris Martinez had 79 yards, Jeremy Kyrkostas 74 yards and Matt Luyster 53 yards. Four out of seven passes thrown were caught, one by Jason Gonzalez for a 33-yard gain, one by Rob Dwyer for a 28-yard gain, one by Kyrkostas for a 17-yard gain and one by Luyster for a 15-yard gain. Three touchdowns were scored by Lyons, two by Martinez and one by Luyster. And let's not forget Brian Krummenacker who made kicking the ball look so easy, getting five out of the six extra points.
Howie Sham had an outstanding game, having 16 tackles and an interception. Joe Diffendale had 12 tackles and Colin McGuire had five tackles, two sacks and caused two fumbles. Sean Curran had a fumble recovery, as did Rob Dwyer who also had four tackles. Bruce Moreno caused a fumble, recovered a fumble and had four tackles, as did Mark Colaizzo, who also had a sack.
All the captains of the team, Bobby Becker, Dwyer, Kyrkostas and Lyons said that the whole team did quite a job and they're hoping to continue this trend throughout the season.
Next game is homecoming on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. against Plainview. The Homecoming Fair starts at 10 a.m. Come on out and support the team.
The Junior Varsity Football team also beat Valley Stream Central J.V. with a score of 46-14.
