A 23-year-old Levittown man was arrested for starting the fire that consumed two storage trailers at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School on September 3.
According to investigators at the Nassau County Arson Squad and the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office, eyewitness accounts of the incident led to the man's arrest. Detective Daniel Mazza, Arson/Bomb Squad, stated the man was a graduate of the school.
According to Detective Dominick Mazza, the fire, whose flames reached heights of 60 - 70 feet, was accelerated due to the combustible contents of the trailers. The trailers stored sports equipment for the school's athletic teams. One of the trailers was completely destroyed while the other was partially destroyed. The adjacent gymnasium sustained minimal smoke damage. The total cost of the fire was estimated between $40,000 - $50,000.
One southbound lane of the Wantagh Parkway between Brush Hollow Road and Old Country Road will be closed for two months of "round-the-clock" reconstruction of a LIRR bridge.
"The rehabilitative efforts conducted on this bridge during this two month period will enhance safety and ensure that the long-term durability of the bridge is intact for continued use in the future," said Assemblyman Marc Herbst.
Herbst, the ranking member of the state Assembly's Transportation Committee, said local officials, emergency and enforcement agencies have been advised of the lane closing. Warning signs and lights have been placed on nearby roads in order to advise motorists of the construction.
Herbst said a single lane closure on the northbound Wantagh Parkway may also be necessary during off-peak periods to accommodate construction. The project is scheduled to be completed in late November.
