The Division 1 PAL 6th grade lacrosse team won their first game of this season by defeating Rockville Centre by a score of 9-5. The team had lost their first two games of the season by two goals each. As was the case in the first two games, the defense led by the team's co-captains Patrick Sheedy and Timmy O'Brien together with Bobby Blankenhorn, was just great. Patrick Sheedy is not only a force to be reckoned with on the crease, he is also very dangerous when he gets the ball. He already has two assists this season. The only thing more impressive then the defense this season has been the superb play of the rookie goalie Joe Assante. Joe has been nothing short of spectacular. He has been averaging 15 saves a game and has not let up a cheap goal yet. Joe's cool presence in the cage is reassuring to both his teammates and his coaches.
While the team's defensive play has been solid, the offense has sputtered a bit. The offense had missed many sure scoring opportunities in the first two games but came alive against Rockville Centre. The team's midfielders, Bobby McAuley (three goals, one assist), Chris Hupfer, Tommy McLoughlin, Joe Geneva (one goal), Mike Cerelini (one assist), Michael Wasiluk (one goal), Anthony Boncic (one goal) and Mike DeMeo all had a great day. The middies moved the ball up the field very well all day. They got the ball to the attack very quickly and executed their plays very well. The middies as a whole played their smartest game so far with Michael Wasiluk and Anthony Boncic having their best games this year.
As for the Hicksville attack it had a good day also. Mike DiMaria, who has been filling in on attack for the injured Danny Abberton, had two assists. Mike also scored a goal in each of the first two gaes and showed he can play attack as well as midfield. As for the injured Danny Abberton he showed how much he has missed playing. Danny scored two goals and had three assists in his season premier. Let the games begin! As for the other Hicksville attackmen, James "Nappy" Napolitano had two goals and played another outstanding game. Nappy has four goals and 4 assists on the year and has been one of the best at coming up with ground balls. But the ground ball king on the Hicksville attack is the toughest player on the team, Nick "The Quietman" Campolettano. Nick had one goal (his third of the season) and played another great game.
This team is really starting to gel and with continued hard work at practice will definitely be a very hard team to beat again this season.
