I want to thank the Hicksville Community Council for selecting me as their 1998 recipient of the President's Award. Although my name is engraved on the plaque, I share this award with all the people of Hicksville. It is because the people care so much for this community and one another that I continue to assist and support your efforts for "A Better Hicksville." This award is especially meaningful to me because you have made me feel I am your friend and friends help each other -- simply because they care! You helped me find a direction toward what should be done and then you have kept the momentum going.
The things accomplished that you felt were worthy of recognition, have been truly a labor of love. For these things are not my "job;" they are my "pleasure!" I was blessed with the opportunity to work alongside the dedicated people of the 350th Anniversary Committee and learned much from my experiences working with them. I know that the members of the committee felt as touched as I when we were honored with the Community Service Award. It's been heartwarming for us to see this community come together and enjoy the celebrations of our 350th Anniversary.
On the evening of the dinner, while surrounded by all the wonderful people that make Hicksville so special, I realized why Hicksville is considered to be the "Heart" of the Town of Oyster Bay. It's more than just the geographical location. It's because Hicksville is made up of people who radiate concern, compassion, show continued determination and are the lifeblood that keeps this community alive and making its own history. The renewal of our community pride is growing each week and is displayed by the efforts of many. Every time one picks up a newspaper or attends a community function, people are talking about what's new. We are talking, communicating, and sharing the responsibility. Hicksville will face the turn of the century with a big smile and deep pride in our hearts.
My deepest gratitude to you all.
