In four years as rector I've kept an unofficial tally of the accidents at the intersection of Old Country Road and Jerusalem Avenue. I estimate conservatively, an average of one serious accident per month. Given prevailing driving practices, high powered vehicles and 'Road Rage' I do not believe things are getting better. What can be done?
I would like the county to make Jerusalem Avenue a One Way, southbound from the split with 107 (Broadway) down to Old Country Road.
The reason? Jerusalem Avenue narrows from two lanes in either direction as it continues north of Old Country Road into one lane in either direction. This fact has been the cause of many of the accidents.
Question, why do we need three roads: 106, 107 and Jerusalem Avenue running in a north and south direction? We have all heard complaints that Hicksville has become a speedway for those passing through. Reduce the number roads and increase police patrols.
There is an added benefit in elimination of the road that presently connects Jerusalem Avenue at the north end with Broadway. It would allow for a consolidation of the Park on the one side of the road with the Triangle on the other creating one large park.
Given the inability of those in authority to correct our traffic flow dilemma, I have little hope that this will ever take place. But after this most recent accident it's clear something must be done.
Those elected or appointed to positions of responsibility and trust are obligated to take note and do something before someone is sacrificed to the expediency of 'cost effective' government and business interests. At the very least some form of barrier could be erected to protect those who must use Jerusalem Avenue at Old Country Road.
I also believe the enforcement of traffic regulations in general ought to hold higher priority. I have seen enough accidents and watched too many who run a red light and scoff at stop signs. It's time to remove the privilege to drive from any whose history indicates a wanton disregard for the safety of others.
Given the history of this intersection, and left uncorrected, history will repeat itself. It's a matter of time before someone is fatally injured at Jerusalem Avenue and Old Country Road. Will it require a life to bring a correction? I for one hope not!
