Two Hicksville school board seats will be contested for in the upcoming elections on May 19. Richard Pfaender and Alice Groody are both vying for the seat being vacated by Pat Love, and Barbara Nocita will attempt to oust incumbent and school board president, Jay Schwartz. Issues concerning, and relating to, facility utilization, have been at the center of public concern, and subsequently at the heart of debate among the candidates.
The proposed 1998/1999 Hicksville Board of Education budget is projecting an increase of over $2.5 million from the year previous. Escalating student enrollments, prompting the hiring of additional teachers across the district and the opening of the East Street School, have been cited as predominant factors for the budget's expanse.
