The St. Ignatius Flames took up defense of the regular season championship by beating St. Mary in their season opener. The Flames sent Mike "Roadrunner" Pesale to the mound to counter the league's most potent lineup. Undaunted by St. Mary's impressive offensive statistics, the intrepid "Roadrunner" used his impeccable control to induce batter after batter to hit weak ground balls. In fact 18 of 21 outs recorded by the Flames were ground outs. As a result, the Flames defeated their talented opponents 6-2.

Mike Pesale's sterling pitching performance was backed by superlative defensive efforts by Rick "Hall of" Fama, Danny "Flash" Ford and Andrew "Bigfoot" Syrett. The offense was led by Erik "Energizer" Akner, who smashed a two run homer, Chris "Cannon" Kircheim, who delivered a two run single, and Matt "Jaws" Scarola, who drilled a clutch double.

In their second game the Flames rode the two hit, 11 strike out pitching performance of Chris "Cannon" Kircheim to a 2-1 victory over St. Raymond. Danny "Flash" Ford pitched the final inning and retired all three batters to record the save. Once again the Flames defense keyed the victory, sparked by the catching duo of Anthony "A.D." Damiano and Casey "Choo-Choo" Lane who combined to toss out three runners on steal attempts. Rich "Hall of " Fama and Matt "Jaws" Scarola made sparkling defensive plays to snuff out potential rallies. Mike "Roadrunner" Pesale, Chris "Cannon" Kircheim and Danny "Flash" Ford drilled base hits in the first inning to produce the Flames' two runs. Andrew "Bigfoot" Syrett and Craig "Hot Shot" Herbst also delivered key hits while Joe "Big Daddy" Lester, Timmy "The Tiger" White, Mike "Hammer" Hebron and Rob LaPolla "Bear" all excelled defensively.
