Navy Seaman Jennifer P. Cullen, daughter of Rita M. Cullen of Meeting Lane in Hicksville, is in the Persian Gulf aboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the USS Nimitz Battle Group. The U.S. Secretary of Defense ordered the battle group to the area in response to rising tensions there.
Cullen is one of more than 5,000 sailors and marines aboard the carrier who will be participating in Operation Southern Watch which enforces the no-fly zone over southern Iraq. The USS Nimitz Battle Group is comprised of 10 tactical aircraft squadrons, eight ships and two submarines.
Cullen's ship, homeported in Bremerton, Washington, will shift its home to Norfolk, Virginia when it finishes its deployment in March. The shift will allow USS Nimitz to undergo repairs and to refuel its nuclear reactors at Newport News Shipyard.
Jennifer is a 1992 graduate of Holy Trinity High School and joined the Navy in April 1997.

Dr. Marlene San Miguel Groner

Dr. Frank A. Cipriani, president of the State University of New York at Farmingdale, is pleased to announce that Dr. Marlene San Miguel Groner of Hicksville has been promoted to associate professor in the English/humanities department at the college.
Dr. Groner has published eight articles in such publications as Great American Women, American Popular Literature, Proceedings of the 1992 Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature, Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, and The Friends of Bemerton Newsletter.
She has presented in scholarly circles on six occasions including the National Popular Culture Conference and Second Annual Central New York Conference on Language and Literature, the Northeast Regional Conference on Christianity and Literature, the International Conference on Popular Culture and the SUNY Council.
Dr. Groner has also received UUP classroom and technology grants totalling $11,600. She is on the executive board of the Long Island Arts Council.
Dr. Groner has been a member of the college's faculty since 1987. In 1993, Dr. Groner received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She received the B.A. and M.A. from Long Island University at CW Post and the PhD from St. John's University.
Congratulations to Jamie and Theresa Eccher of Hicksville on the birth of their baby girl, Caitlin Alyssa Eccher. She was born at Mid-Island Hospital on Oct. 16 and weighed 8 lbs. 11 oz.

Justin James Comito and Elizabeth Anne Jurgensen

Elizabeth Anne Jurgensen, daughter of Richard and Joyce Jurgensen of Hicksville, and Justin James Comito, son of Vincent and Karen Comito of Seaford, were married July 4, 1997. Their wedding vows were taken at Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church in Hicksville and officiated by Reverend Monsignor James Boesel. In lieu of fireworks and in consideration of the environment, the couple asked the guests to release colorful Monarch butterflies after the ceremony. The reception was held at the beautiful Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury.
Kristin Sneyd of Hicksville, a good friend since childhood, was the maid of honor. The bridesmaids were Jacqueline DePalma, Melissa Hendricksen, Jennifer Ross and Nicole DeRobertis. Kevin Comito, the groom's brother, was best man. The ushers were Vincent Comtio, Paul; Jurgensen, Philip Pierre-Louis and William Meehan. The flower girl was Calyn Elizabeth Jurgensen and the ring bearer was Tyler Moran.
Special thanks to the beautiful trumpet playing of Rudy DePalma of Hicksville and the gorgeous singing by Nicole Piccolomini, a Hicksville friend now attending the Juilliard School of Music.
Elizabeth is a 1992 graduate of Hicksville High School. She received her Bachelor's degree in music education at Hofstra University in 1996 and is currently pursuing her master's degree at Hofstra in wind conducting. She teaches music at Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick and is the assistant marching band director and drill instructor with the Levittown Marching Band.
Justin, a 1990 graduate of Seaford High School, has his bachelor's degree in music performance and graduated Hofstra in 1995 with his master's in music education. He is currently the band director for Islip High School.
If music be the food of love, play on! This marriage is a celebration of love and music. God bless you both. The newlyweds spent thier honeymoon in Cancun and are currently residing in Bethpage.
Scott Skrynecki and Debbie Schiavone, both 1996 graduates of Hicksville High School, attend the University of Delaware. They've pursued their musical interests in the university's marching band.
