Hicksville High School Class of 2007 Grad

Volunteers in Africa

Uganda, a landlocked country in the eastern half of Africa, has seen its share of turmoil and treachery, but Katelynn Carroll, like many volunteers around the world, is helping the country in a grassroots effort to create a brighter and more positive future for its inhabitants.

Carroll, a Hicksville High School Class of 2007 graduate, recently returned from an 11-day volunteer mission in the tiny village of Wairaka (pronounced “why-lee-ca”) located outside of Jinja, Uganda. A fellow Hicksville Comet from the Class of 2005, Frank Regan, joined her on the journey.

The featured speaker at the Sept. 21 Open Meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club will be Amy Palmiero-Winters, a Hicksville resident who recently was awarded the ESPY as the best female athlete with a disability.

The event will be held in the auditorium of the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, 999 Old Country Road in Plainview, starting promptly at 8 p.m. on Sept. 21.

On Saturday, Aug. 7, Mastermind Unit (MMU) partnered with the Michael Magro Foundation, a Hicksville organization dedicated to safeguarding and enhancing the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families, to translate an 18-team soccer tournament into a mega-charity event that raised close to $10,000 to benefit the Foundation and its mission on behalf of children with cancer.

The sudden spike in soccer interest generated by the World Cup games made the Mastermind Unit’s Third Annual Soccer for a Cause Tournament an obvious crowd-pleaser. A non-profit group empowering individuals to take a leadership role in their community, MMU members are challenged to leverage their skills by creating new ideas, helping others and serving as catalysts for change.

The 13- and 14-year-old Cardinal Baseball teams competed in a split squad game on July 30 at historic Doubleday Field in Cooperstown. The boys prepared for the trip all spring, participating in numerous fundraisers and raffles throughout the year so as to maximize their experience.

In addition to playing on the field, a field where hundreds of Major League players and future Hall of Famers also played, the trip included a tour of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
