The North Shore-LIJ Health System has announced the opening of a Men’s Reproductive and Sexual Medicine Program at the Smith Institute for Urology, located at North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Advanced Medicine in Lake Success.
Without the use of human volunteers in clinical trials, there would be few or no new medicines or diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Under strict guidelines there is a constant search for newer, safer and more effective medications and equipment. There are many clinical trials being conducted in Long Island hospitals and other venues, many funded by the federal government. Jobs in health care are predicted to increase, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics with health care alone projected to generate three million new wage and salary jobs between 2006 and 2016. This is more than any other industry.
To meet that need, workers in all sectors of health care will need to be trained and educated. The need will be especially significant on Long Island, whose demographics point to an aging population with more than 800,000 baby boomers turning 65 in less than two years. Aging seniors will require more care for their chronic and complex medical conditions.
