Healthy Living is a monthly special section published in all 18 Anton Community Newspapers focusing on a wide range of health topics and highlighting the extensive health services available in our area. A sampling of current stories appears here.
This is National Mental Health Month. One of the region’s leading organizations to help those suffering from mental illness and fighting the stigma of mental illness is NAMI, or National Alliance on Mental Illness.
One of their most interesting national programs is called CIT (Crisis Intervention Team). The program is being introduced on Long Island for the first time through the Hempstead Police Department and NAMI Queens/Nassau.
For a long time, police have had difficulty in dealing with persons with apparent mental disease who are still walking the streets freely but causing fear among observers and the police officers who are supposed to handle these situations.
As the weather gets nice, it is good to get out and enjoy the spring and to try to remember those in need as well. A dedicated group of people have put together the Every Woman Matters walk to benefit women’s health and the second annual event is coming right up. The walk will take place May 22.
“Last year’s walk was attended by well over 4,000 people and we expect this year’s attendance to be even greater,” said an organizer. The walk will take place, rain or shine, at Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh, field 5.
Winthrop-University Hospital is holding an Open House to invite the public to meet and learn about the daVinci Si HD robot, a cutting-edge, minimally-invasive technology that is ideal for many surgeries and especially appropriate for surgery in delicate or hard-to-reach areas.
The event will take place on May 18 and May 19 at the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion, located at 1300 Franklin Avenue in Garden City. The Open House will include hands-on demonstrations as well as informative lectures about this exciting technology and its benefits.
