Memorial Day weekend featured 6 games played on a beautiful Friday afternoon and a scorching hot Sunday afternoon. The Marlins had a successful weekend defeating the White Sox 11-6 and the Phillies 13-11. The Marlins were led by Michael Hershenhorn with 4 RBIs, Yves Trokel with 3 RBIs and Jason Seidman who had 5 RBIs and pitched two scoreless innings. In addition to their close loss to the Marlins the Phillies defeated the Orioles 13-3. Hitting stars for the Phillies over the weekend included Alex Bruni and Jonathan Perlman who each had multiple hit games including Jonathan’s record breaking 6 hits in a single game. Michael Cummings also stroked a double.
In other action the Astros also won a pair defeating the Braves 9-0 and the Orioles 9-3. Carlos Zurita had a huge weekend putting the ball in play 6 times resulting in 4 hits. Nate Diaz had a single, double and triple against the Orioles. Against the Braves Nick Bornstein and John Kyriannis each turned in a stunning defensive play worthy of ESPN’s Sports Center. The Orioles received weekend contributions from Jay Korman and Steve Samuel in the hitting department and found a solid pitcher in Michael Young.
Finally, the Braves rebounded from their Friday loss to tie the White Sox on Sunday with a stirring last inning comeback featuring a Jake Guggenheimer triple. It seems every member of the Braves contributed in some way to the comeback including Ben Kadan with some fine defense and Matin Hakimian with solid pitching. As we reach the midpoint of the season each team is finding its own formula for success and we look forward to seeing how things play out as we move toward the playoffs in June!
