For the first time ever, the finest CYO teams from the western most portions of Brooklyn to the eastern tip of Montauk, and all points in between, were invited to play in an Inter-Diocesan Championship Tournament and a team from Great Neck, the St. Aloysius sixth grade boys team, will go down in history as the tournament’s very first champion. The tournament victory capped an extremely successful season for the local boys who qualified for the tournament by virtue of having finished in first place in their division during the CYO of Nassau and Suffolk counties’ regular season.
The team’s potent offense was led by George Vlantis who shredded opposing defenses with his ability to score from the outside as well as the inside; the dynamic all around play of Thomas Mangin; Sheldon Henry whose formidable playmaking skills were matched by his rugged rebounding; long range threat Chris Park, and Max Uribe, Phillip Schifilliti, and Tyler Witt who provided the lightning quick ball movement and adept passing. However, as any knowledgeable basketball fan knows championships are won with defense and rebounding which is why certain team members deserve to be singled out. In particular, Lucas Cowen spearheaded a tenacious defense; Jesse Romano seemed to come up with every loose ball; and Timothy Samuels and Sam Kashi provided relentless rebounding on both ends of the floor while playing excellent interior defense.
While the 2011-2012 season has concluded for the St. Aloysius CYO program, it will not be long before the teams are back at practice again. Next fall, the program hopes to have multiple teams in the CYO of Nassau and Suffolk county fourth through eighth grade divisions striving to match the accomplishments of this year’s sixth grade boys team. In fact, the program will be hosting tryouts for next year’s teams during the month of May.
