At the halfway point of the season, the St. Aloysius CYO 5th grade boys’ basketball team finds itself in a heated battle for one of the division’s three playoff spots.
On Saturday, the team took on one of its main rivals for division supremacy, Our Lady of Victory of Floral Park. Even though Our Lady of Victory enjoyed a comfortable lead for most of the game, the St. Aloysius boys were able to claw back and tie the game behind the fine play of David Klebanow, Josh Ilyadzhanov, Elliot Wiessman, Derek Coval, Brett Figelman, Jonathan Rabbany, Matt Choi, Den Ajodan and Sean Mc Award.
After a layup by Justin Menos gave St. Aloysius the lead with four minutes to play, the scene was set for a dramatic finish. The teams traded baskets over the final minutes with neither team able to draw clear of the other. However, with only seconds to play, Our Lady of Victory was able to sink a long jumper that proved to be the difference in a two-point win.
Despite the loss, the team proved it can more than hold its own against one of the division’s finest and is looking forward to renewing its pursuit of a playoff berth when league play resumes against St. Thomas of West Hempstead on Jan. 7, 2012.
