The Great Neck Wolverines High School Hockey Team, sponsored by Great Neck PAL, continue to get ready for the 2011-2012 season. In this week’s practice, the team went over some of the new league rules. The goal in youth hockey this season is to cut down on the head contact and reduce the amount of head injuries that have occurred in the game. Any contact to the head, either intentional or accidental is supposed to be accessed a severe penalty. In practice the team worked on keeping their hands low to avoid any head contact with other players. The Wolverines are in full agreement with the league that the rule changes are necessary and contact to the head should avoided at all costs.
This past week the Wolverines schedule was announced. The Varsity schedule will feature some new names from last year. The season opens on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at the Bethpage rink vs. Bethpage. For the home opener at Parkwood, the heaviest attended game from last year, the Wolverines take on the 2010-2011 division champions from East Williston. The Wolverines will need all the support from the home crowd that night, so mark your calendars for the big night Monday Nov. 7 at 8:15.
Great Neck faces off against some of Nassau’s best this season in addition the teams mentioned above such as Long Beach, Levittown, Jericho, Syosset, Oceanside, Lynbrook, Port Washington, Bellmore/Merrick and Cold Spring Harbor. The full schedule will be posted shortly so keep looking for the dates, particularly the home dates right here in hockey town. The Wolverines love the support and look forward to seeing you at the rink.
