The Great Neck PAL boys 5/6th grade lacrosse team has finished its 2009 season by defeating Oceanside 10-8 and losing to Jericho in the final minute of the season ending game played at the LI PAL festival, 8-7.
“The boys really progressed as the season went on,” said PAL lacrosse director/coach Artie Diamond. “We were a bit thin on numbers this season but played everyone close. This team has tremendous character. By the time they get to high school the lacrosse community will know who they are. While the wins over Freeport and Oceanside are the highlights, the real success is watching the boys execute the fundamentals under game conditions. For us, it’s all about teaching and having a good time,” Diamond said.
Dan Doreste, Andrew Voigt and Robbie Tantillo made up the first midfield and Doreste was the team’s leading scorer. On the second midfield, newcomers Jack Sherman, Ryan Lang and Shane Smith surrounded vet Jay Kim and the line showed great improvement during the season. The attack consisted of Jay Zussman, Aaron Ratner, Tyler Weiss, Aaron Khorshad and was led by standout Jarett Greben who was second on the team in scoring. On defense, Tyler Schiff anchored the unit and was backed by Zack Levanthal, Bryce Labonski and Sean Na. Eric Linell and West Strausman were the team’s goalies.
Diamond was assisted by Sam Strausman and Rob Tantillo the past two seasons.
