Four students from North High and South High Schools have been accepted to perform in the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) High School Honor Concert Band, to be held in Syracuse in early March 2014. Two additional students were chosen as alternates. These students were selected by a statewide panel of NYSBDA music educators after evaluating recordings of their performances.
North High School honorees include Chris Peter Angelidis (oboe), Casey Poon (tuba), and Jasmine Wong (clarinet) with Cordelia Ding (piccolo) as an alternate. Their music teacher is Joseph Rutkowski.
South High’s winners include Elliot Horowitz (baritone saxophone), with Jay Zussman (bass clarinet) as an alternate. They are taught by Mark Boschen and Michael Schwartz.
More than 425 applications were submitted for High School Honor Band consideration. From those, 115 students were selected to participate; another 22 were designated alternates. These students will be rehearsing and performing a concert with some of their most talented peers in grades 9–12. Their performance will be conducted by a college wind ensemble director.
