The Great Neck School District is offering an SAT review course, either with or without an additional ACT review course. At a recent Board of Education public action meeting, it was announced that the school district “recognizes that many students enroll in private SAT and/or ACT review courses outside the regular school day.” And in order to offer this additional help to the students, the district chose to offer such courses, through recognized, outside agencies, both helping students and saving money for the district.
The school district advertised for proposals from “established quality outside companies” to offer cost-effective SAT and SAT with an ACT extension review course, at Great Neck Public Schools sites. Kaplan, Princeton Review and Revolution Prep all bid on the proposals. Kaplan won the bid, meeting the district's guidelines at the lowest cost. It provided an economic benefit equal to or greater than the other proposal that met the required guidelines.
The economic benefit to the school district also includes the fact that the outside service, Kaplan, provides the additional supervision and overhead required to run the program.
The proposal also includes a provision for partial scholarships for students meeting “demonstrated need” criteria.
Through Kaplan K12 Learning Services, LLC, the SAT review course will cost $499 per student, $699 per student with the ACT extension review course. For the school district, the SAT course is $299 per student and $499 per student with the ACT extension review course.
