Editorial: It Pays To Patronize Our Local Businesses

“Shop Great Neck” is one of my favorite editorials, one of my very favorite catch phrases. We are so fortunate to have healthy, thriving business districts that provide so many of our daily shopping, professional and service needs. Isn’t it wonderful when you need “something” and you do not have to travel far? Isn’t it great when you can just “run into town” to pick up a special gift for a birthday party that afternoon or find just the perfect shoes for dinner out that evening? And, if you like, that simple little shopping trip can easily include a stop for brunch or lunch or a delicious cold treat on a warm day.

Now, let me remind you that shopping is not all our business districts have to offer. In addition to lots and lots of physicians and dentists, Great Neck also boasts a whole host of service businesses. Need a plumber? Need an electrician? Need someone to smooth out the bumps and bruises on your brand new car? Need someone to quickly restore your heating or air-conditioning? Look no further than your own backyard. It’s all here in Great Neck. For the very best service, definitely check the Great Neck phone book.

Just recently, I came home to find that my central air-conditioning suddenly was not cooling my house at all. It was a very, very hot day … with possible record-breaking temperatures to come. Now, no one likes the idea of no air-conditioning in mid-summer, but I was especially concerned as I had two very special little guests —- my 4-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter and her 6-month-old brother. I certainly did not want any of my family uncomfortable, but I was especially worried about the baby and how he would handle extreme heat. I needed help and I looked no further than my own hometown.

A real hometown heating and air-conditioning service, right here in Great Neck, has always been my heating/air-conditioning service center. I know the owners; they live and work in Great Neck, involved in community organizations. So I called for service, late on a Thursday afternoon, told them of my dilemma, told them how worried I was for my baby grandson having to endure extreme heat. A serviceman came to my door within the half-hour and stayed until the a/c was fixed, at least temporarily. Those very understanding servicemen stayed as long as needed to find a solution and promised a return visit if there is indeed a larger problem.

I was much relieved, and extremely grateful, as I watched the little one cool off. We both calmed down.

Would I have received this kind of service, this type of concern and immediate response from a “stranger?” I doubt it. I always try first to shop in Great Neck, so of course I turned to my Great Neck a/c service center. And it paid off, as it always does. My neighbors at my local a/c service center cared and came to the rescue!

I turned to Great Neck first … and so should you. For the easiest and most delightful shopping, for the best, most personal service, shop Great Neck first! You will be glad you did.
