Jerome J. Brookman
Jerome (Jerry) J. Brookman, devoted husband of 70 years to Rhoda Fixell, father to Bill (Joanne) and Jill, grandfather to Andrew Lapidus, Noah and Hannah Brookman, founding publisher and editor of Sound Publishing Co., passed away Nov. 20, 2009. We will miss his prodigious memory.
Born Jan. 11, 1911 in New York City, he graduated from City College in 1928 and attended Fordham Law. He was co-author of the play Press Time produced by Labor Stage and noted in the Burns Mantle book Best Plays of 1938-39.
He was a veteran of WWII Pacific Theatre where he received the Purple Heart and special accommodation for his performance as editor of the island newspaper in Ie Shima Island in the Ryukyus Group. The newspaper was printed daily and served a force of 40,000 men. He received commendation by the Commanding Officer, Omar Bradley.
Among the magazines produced by Sound Publishing Company were Musical Electronics, Modern Communications, Sound Merchandising and Sound & Communications.
