Rita Wechsler, who was born in Brooklyn and lived in Great Neck for 52 years, passed away on Sept. 2, 2010 at the age of 80. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Morton Wechsler; two children Gail Wechsler (and husband Bob Cropf) and Robert Wechsler (and wife Kathy); and five grandchildren, Keith, Kaitlyn and Kyle Wechsler and Jeremy and Hannah Cropf.
Rita was very active her entire life in political causes, including working as a member of Great Neck SANE against the Vietnam War in the 1960s and working on women’s rights issues in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond.
Rita worked at Great Neck Community School as a preschool teacher from 1970 until 1985. She also ran a private playgroup in Great Neck for several years beginning in 1985. She had a special gift in her ability to work with children.
At the time of her death Rita was co-director of Great Neck Womanspace. She received an award of achievement from Womanspace in 2008 and also ran the Book and Author Series for that organization. Rita also was a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and an active participant at the Great Neck Senior Center.
Rita will be remembered as a remarkably giving and loving person who lived life to the fullest. Contributions in her memory may be made to Temple Isaiah of Great Neck, One Chelsea Pl., the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice. Services were held on Sept. 8 at Riverside-Nassau North Chapel, Great Neck.
