The “Beast” is back in town as the famous 1909 Alco 6 Black Beast vintage racer returns to the 27th Annual Great Neck Plaza AutoFest and Street Festival for the third consecutive year on Sunday, Sept. 18 (rain date: Sunday, Sept. 25). Built in 1909, the Alco 6 racer participated in the inaugural Indianapolis 500 race in 1911 and was victorious in the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup Races, run on Long Island.
The Black Beast’s prolific history was enhanced even further this year as it was one of seven vintage race cars to participate in a ceremonial, parade lap at the 2011 Indianapolis 500 as part of the commemoration of the race’s 100th year anniversary.
In addition to the Alco 6, over 100 vintage vehicles are expected to be on display including Model A, Model T, and other classic American and European cars.
In memory of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, this year’s AutoFest is being dedicated to the families of those who were tragically taken from us on that day. In lieu of car registrations, classic car owners are being asked to make a contribution to one of two Long Island-based charities that help support the victim’s families of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy: Tuesday’s Children (TuesdaysChildren.org) and the Sept. 11th Families Association (911families.org). Additionally, all profits from Great Neck Plaza BID-sponsored festival rides and attractions will be donated to the two charities, and musical groups performing at the festival will be making donations to the charities.
The Great Neck Plaza Business Improvement District’s (BID) mission is to foster and promote a positive and vital business community through various initiatives including consumer awareness programs, media/advertising campaigns and sponsorship of many events including the Annual Great Neck Plaza AutoFest and Street Festival. The daylong event draws a crowd of tens of thousands and features live entertainment, rock-climbing walls, a petting zoo, carnival games, inflatable bouncers and showcases the sights, sounds and tastes of Great Neck Plaza.
