Jewish Film Series
The Great Neck Arts Center is partnering with Great Neck Synagogue to expand their film offerings with the new Jewish Film Series. The series will highlight films with Jewish themes and/or featuring Jewish artists and filmmakers. All films will be followed by a discussion with a relevant speaker who will provide exciting insight into the film and its subject matter. Films will be screened at 7:30 p.m. at Clearview Cinemas Great Neck Squire Theater, 115 Middle Neck Rd. Entry is 7 p.m. for subscribers and 7:15 p.m. for ticket holders. The story of Jewish immigrants who come to the Lower East Side of New York City in 1896 from Europe, Hester Street stars Carol Kane in an Oscar-nominated role. The film is noteworthy for its detailed reconstruction of Jewish immigrant life, with much of the dialogue delivered in Yiddish with English subtitles. Director Joan Mickling Silver will join the audience for a Q&A after the film, to discuss the film that pioneered a wave of films that dealt with the complexities of American Jewish identity. She will be joined by producer Sarah Teale.
Brandeis National Committee
Nassau North Chapter open meeting at the Great Neck Library, Bayview Avenue Main Branch, at 10:30 a.m. The presentation is not to be missed. Speakers and their subject promise to be most fascinating. Two Brandeis members from the German Conversation Study Group will talk about their odysseys traveling from their European homes to the U.S. during the Naziera. Their experiences are almost unbelievable and deeply emotional and surely there will be many questions and explanations. Before the presentation at 11 a.m. there will be a brunch of bagels and cheese, coffee, cake and conversation. Husbands and friends are welcome.
Great Neck Garden Club
Presents a program on Mechanics-The Inside of Flower Arranging by Alice Dawes at 1 p.m. at Great Neck House. She will discuss the various means used to display flowers to their best advantage. The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.

GN Resident Leslie Dale Feldman To Lecture
Dr. Leslie Dale Feldman, who is now teaching a seminar on her latest book Spaceships and Politics: the Political Theory of Rod Serling, has been honored by being awarded the prestigious prize of Distinguished Lecturer by Hofstra University. Dr. Feldman will be speaking on her book at 11:15 a.m. in the Cultural Center Theater, South Campus of Hofstra University, Hempstead. Her lecture is entitled “Lessons from the Twilight Zone” and includes themes of morality, the conflict between the individual and the state, conformity and other political themes. The book explores these themes as presented in Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone. Admission is free and the public is invited. Dr. Feldman also has a forthcoming book entitled Rustics and Politics: the Political Theory of the Beverly Hillbillies.

Project Independence
Project Independence Neighborhood Naturally Occurring Retirement Community Supportive Services Program in New Hyde Park invites people, age 60 and over, to a weekly social discussion group on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Parkville Branch of the Great Neck Library. Come for interesting conversation and the opportunity to make new friends. Group members will decide what topics of conversation to discuss. Author Steve Wick To Appear
Newsday editor and author Steve Wick will be guest in the pulpit at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck, 150 Hicks Ln., when he offers a talk on his book, The Long Night: William L. Shirer and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. All members of the community are invited to attend the service in commemoration of the Holocaust, which begins at 7:30 p.m. He is the author of two non-fiction books in addition to The Long Night: Bad Company: Drugs, Hollywood and the Cotton Club Murder and Heaven and Earth: The Last Farmers of the North Fork. Celebrating Shakespeare’s Birthday
Actress Shirley Romaine will present “Shakespeare for Everyone” at the Jericho Library, 1 Merry Ln., at 2 p.m. The program from her series “All the World’s a Stage” will focus on Shakespeare as a man of the theater. Ms. Romaine’s talk on the bard will be augmented by her performing scenes from the plays including: Julius Caesar, Richard III, Henry V, Hamlet, Antony and Cleopatra and Othello. Free Reiki Workshop
A free workshop on Reiki for current and past breast cancer patients is offered from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique for stress reduction, relaxation and accelerated healing. Through gentle touch, Reiki moves energy through the body to promote balance and deep relaxation while enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Participants will experience a relaxing meditation followed by the opportunity to nourish body, mind and spirit through receiving Reiki yourself. The instructor is Kathie Lipinski, licensed Usui/Karuna Reiki master teacher, holistic nurse and a certified hypnotist. Awards will be presented to those who have made major contributions of community service for the benefit of the Great Neck community. Family Law Workshop
The Law Firm of Wisselman, Harounian & Associates, P.C., 1010 Northern Blvd., Suite 300, Great Neck, is celebrating its 35th year in business on LI and offering several free community workshops for individuals with family law questions. People are invited to attend these meetings even if they don’t need an attorney or already have an attorney. People can come to one meeting or as many of these meetings as they would like to attend. In addition to legal information, many people find the camaraderie offered by a group to be helpful. Today’s workshop: Divorcing Dads are invited to a Fathers’ Rights workshop at 6 p.m. There are some dads that are not quite ready for a legal consultation, this is a way of discussing issues and hearing other’s experiences. Separation, divorce, custody, visitation, child support, relocation, domestic violence and false allegations of domestic violence are all discussed.
