USTA Offering Free Tennis Lessons At Eisenhower Park June 24

The United States Tennis Association will be hosting tennis lessons on Sunday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event is free, and open to all ages and skill level.
Held at the tennis courts at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, the event dubbed “Love on Long Island,” will provide both children and adults the opportunity to learn the game of tennis or improve upon already acquired skills. Provided in conjunction with the United States Tennis Association and the United States Professional Tennis Association, the day will feature ‘10 and Under Tennis,’ a new and innovative way to learn the game that also provides a one year USTA membership for children 10 and under.
As the national governing body for the sport of tennis, the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) mission is to promote and develop the growth of the game. Established in 1881, the USTA is a progressive and diverse not-for-profit organization whose volunteers, professional staff, and financial resources support this singular mission. Similarly, the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) aims to grow the game of tennis by elevating the standards of tennis teaching professionals and coaches. Founded in 1927, it is the world’s oldest and largest association of tennis-teaching professionals and has more than 15,000 members worldwide.
Eisenhower Park, the jewel of Nassau County’s park system, provides over 930 acres of activities which include a swimming pool and fitness center at the world-class Nassau County Aquatic Center; three 18-hole golf courses a driving range and mini-golf; athletic fields; playgrounds; a two-mile fitness trail; basketball and tennis courts; and summer entertainment at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. In addition, the park includes beautiful memorials to the nation’s veterans, as well as to the Nassau County Firefighters and County residents who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. Once again the Great Neck School District received a host of gifts and donations. All were recently approved and accepted by the Board of Education at school board public action meetings.
Eight donations were received for the Robotics Club, to help offset some of the many costs associated with running a successful robotics program. Donations were sent from: the Rotary Club of Gold Coast, Cathy Sung, Stephen and Beth Wolf, Joel and Ellen Dressner, Jay and Judi Bosworth, Edith Novick and Dmitriy Tokar, Gary and Bianna Gal, Scott and Barbara Erlich and Jill A. Krieger.

Residents in the Great Neck School District vote on the proposed $209,442,904 2013-2014 school budget this coming Tuesday, May 21. In addition to the budget vote (Proposition No. 1), eligible voters also vote on the Great Neck Library budget (Proposition No. 2) and for one Board of Education trustee, Monique Bloom (who is running unopposed, having been appointed to the school board last year).
As always, by far the largest percentage of the budget is dedicated to instruction. This amounts to around 75 percent of each year’s budget.

The Great Neck Park District, in partnership with the Great Neck Figure Skating Club and the Great Neck School District, started the Therapeutic Skating program in February 2013. This program was extremely beneficial to students with special needs from Great Neck North Middle and High Schools. The skaters met bi-monthly at the Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink through Tuesday, April 23. They ended the season with a skating session as usual and then enthusiastically were awarded their trophies.

The Great Neck Dodgers baseball team opened against Manhasset at the new Manhasset Valley Park on Saturday, April 27.
