South Middle School's eighth-grade Girls Empowerment Group took part in a great culminating experience-a trip to Island Rock in Plainview. The group met for 12 weeks, during which time participants learned how to make knowledge-based decisions and increased their sense of self. The result was great bonding, lots of sharing, and friendship. The rock climbing trip was especially chosen since it provided students the opportunity to practice some of their newly acquired skills. The girls supported and encouraged one another while climbing a 30-foot rock wall and rappelling from a 25-foot tower. Group faculty sponsors were Sivan Erstein, Joan Greenberg, Harriet Miller, and Paul Ziring. A great time was had by all!
