The weekend of March 13-15, the Great Neck Park District Bruins hockey teams: Midget Minor (ages 15 and16); Bantam (ages 13 and 14); Pee Wee (ages 12 and 13) and Squirts (ages 9 and 10) participated in Spring Tournaments. The Bantam, Pee Wee and Squirt teams competed in Hollydell, NJ and the Midget Minor team in Pennsauken, NJ.
The 16 players on the Midget Minor team competed in four games over a two-day period. The tournament started off slow for the Bruins on Saturday morning with a 4-2 loss to White Plains. Saturday night things started to turn around for the Bruins as they tied Philadelphia North Catholic 3-3. Justin Blair and James Clausen scored the two Bruins goals. Sunday morning the Bruins secured a spot in the finals with a 3-2 victory over the host Blazers. Joe Ginsberg had two of the three goals. Sunday afternoon was time for goaltender Jason Becker to shine. Becker made 23 saves in route to a Bruins 3-1 victory over Philadelphia North Catholic. The goal scorers were James Clausen with two and Joe Ginsberg had the other goal.
The Bantam Great Neck Bruins proved once again that they were a great team during their competition over the 3-day tournament weekend, playing five games total. The Hollydell Spring Classic tournament started Friday night with a Bruins 4-1 victory over the Bayonne Rangers. Ben Todaro had two of the four Bruins goals. Saturday morning the Bruins train kept rolling with a 7-4 victory over the Hurricanes. Goal scorers included Robert Campbell and Ryan Martino. Saturday night the Bruins faced their biggest challenge taking on the host team from Hollydell. It was a fast paced game with Bruins goalies Sam Nagelberg and Devin Gambino keeping the score at 1-0 late into the third period. With three minutes left Nikita Idiri buried a wrist shot past the Hollydell goalie to tie up the game. Less than a minute later Adam Cieslewicz scored a wrap around goal to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead. In the finals, the Bruins would run into the same Hollydell team that gave them such a hard time the evening before. The Bruins jumped right down Hollydell's throats with three goals, from Sean Dolan, Max Latin, and Robert Campbell in the game's opening five minutes. The Bruins never looked back and captured the first-place trophy 6-3 over the host team.
The Great Neck Bruins Pee Wee 20-man team continued to build on their strong finish to the season. The opening game of the tournament saw the Bruins beat the Delaware Jr. Blue Hens 3-1 on three goals from Steven Cacchioli and a stellar performance from Emily Becker in net. Saturday morning the Bruins faced off against the host team from Hollydell and won a tight 3-2 game on a Dan Stevenson goal with under four minutes left in the game. Saturday evening the Bruins rolled over the Hurricanes 8-1 the catapult them into the finals. In the finals they would face the Delaware Jr. Blue Hens and once again the Bruins proved to be the superior team winning 5-2.
The Squirt Great Neck Bruins built on their season at the Hollydell Spring Classic tournament. On Saturday night they played the host team from Hollydell right down to the wire. Caleb Marks held the Bruins in the game making 20 saves. Of the 15 players, Mike Fometescu, Tyler Khani, and Matt Katz had the three Bruins goals. Ultimately the Bruins fell short 4-3 but, it showed the improvement these players have undergone throughout the year.
The Park District's hockey teams have a lot to be proud of. Keep up the good work!
