Paul A. Lasher, teacher of Spanish at Syosset High School from 1961 to 1987, passed away recently. A graduate of St. Mary's High School, Manhasset, he received his A.B. degree from Fordham University. After studying a year in Spain as a scholarship student, he received the Diploma of Hispanic Studies from the University of Madrid.
His graduate studies were taken at St. John's University where he received an MA degree in Spanish and an MS degree in secondary education. He received as well a diploma in the Spanish language of the International University of Santander, Spain.
As a dedicated teacher of the Spanish language and culture, he made many trips to Spain during his lifetime. In recent years he devoted himself to the Great Neck Hispanic community as editor of the Sunday bulletins at St. Aloysius Church.
Mr. Lasher was a life-long resident of Great Neck.
Steve N. Baumrin
Family and friends crowded Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York City on March 2, 2009 to bid farewell and pay tribute to Steve N. Baumrin. Steve N. Baumrin, 56, passed away unexpectedly Feb. 28, 2009. A graduate of Great Neck North High School (1970), he attended the School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis. He loved painting in his studio and chronicling his life through his art and his poetry. He was the next generation to run the Delancy Tool Company. Steve was a man of vision who helped others to fulfill their own dreams and ambitions. He was deeply loved by his family and friends. Always there for everyone, Steven didn't know the word "no" when it came to being kind, generous and compassionate. His wit, warmth, sparkling eyes and broad smile will be missed by all who knew him. He was a man who knew what it meant to love unconditionally. Beloved son of Phyllis B. Davis and the late Leonard Baumrin, step-son of Sherman Davis. Loving and adored husband of Melanie. Devoted, adoring and proud father to Julien and Chloe. Big brother to Michael (Sara) and Gail (Ira). Donations may be made to humanitarian organizations in his memory.
Seymour Kaplan, MD, of Great Neck, died on March 9, 2009. He was a self-employed physician. He is survived by his wife Natalie (nee Solomon); his daughter Niki Kaplan; sons, Dean, Carl and Brad Kaplan; sister Myrna Ochs; and grandchildren, Daniel, Sam, Sara, Jessica, Sheri, Russ, James, Olivia and Emily. Arrangements were made by Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. Services were held at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck with Rabbi Robert Widom officiating. Interment New Montefiore Cemetery, Pinelawn. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
