By all standards, for those wrapped up in winter coats, hats and gloves, the Polar Plunge Day at North Hempstead Town's Bar Beach was an ordinary cold winter day at the beach.

But not to those who were plunging into the icy, cold waters of Hempstead Harbor. For them, it was freee...zing.

Among the many hearty souls "plunging" were North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, who had with him his 5-year-old son, Michael. For Kaiman and Suozzi this was their third year of "plunging."

Also dunking into the water were Supervisor Kaiman's wife Kim, New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Fran Reid, Sue Auriemma, of Munsey Park, and Chrissy Oliva, from New Hyde Park.

Each one of the ladies was donned in a beautiful white cozy bathrobe that came in mighty handy after the plunge, and each was personalized with their names.

There was much pageantry attached to the event, with booths selling all kinds of wares, including sweat shirts, T-shirts and wristbands to support the Special Olympics. The event was even protected by some of the members of the National Guard.

To lead the "plungers" into the water, reminiscent of the tale of the Pied Piper, was a very festive Pipe and Drum band decked out in authentic dress, who couldn't have been too warm either.

The Pipers led the swimmers to the water's edge and then one by one they all plunged in and plunged out again, very, very quickly.

It was just another fun event in the Town of North Hempstead and it raised alot of money for a very worthy cause, The Special Olympics. Logo
