The New York-Long Island Region of the Special Olympics held its first meeting to discuss the 5th Annual Winter Festival and Polar Plunge that will take place Feb. 28, at North Hempstead's Beach Park in Port Washington. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Plunge takes place at noon.

Hundreds are expected to be "freezin' for a reason," including Nassau and Suffolk County police departments, councilmen and women, and, for the third year in a row, Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman. Special Olympics NY-Long Island provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
