In the next few weeks, shoppers at most supermarkets are going to see sales on many of the traditional "Thanksgiving" food items. There are likely to be specials on stuffing mix, cranberry sauce and canned vegetables. Some supermarkets will also have promotions which entitle shoppers to qualify for "free" turkeys when they buy a certain amount of groceries.
In the days just prior to Thanksgiving, the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) will be giving out turkeys to thousands of local families who might not be able to afford the holiday meal that most of us take for granted. With each turkey, the INN also provides a "fixings" bag, which includes stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, cans of vegetables, canned yams, jello, cans of gravy, and canned fruit.
Last year, the INN gave out more than 3,000 turkeys and fixings bags. The need this year is likely to be even higher than last year. And here's where you can help.
When you're in the supermarket buying any of these Thanksgiving food items, buy one more than you need for your family. The INN needs your help so that every family can celebrate Thanksgiving. Put together a bag of "fixings" and drop it off at 7 Lee Court West in Great Neck. If you have a coupon for a free turkey, throw that in the bag as well.
All your donations will be transported to the INN by David Golbert. For directions or additional information, please call 917-418-2451 or email: davegolbert@yahoo.com
As I recall from my American History class, the pilgrims needed some help from their Native American neighbors at the first Thanksgiving. Let's keep that tradition going-because that's the real spirit of Thanksgiving.
