Despite the hot, hazy and humid conditions, walkers hit the road for the Long Island 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk on Saturday, June 7. With sheer determination and a lot of water, participants took the weather in stride walking 20 miles the first day and finishing up with 15 miles on Sunday, June 8. The Annual Long Island 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk is a 35-mile, two day journey of inspiration, hope and healing that takes place along scenic Suffolk County roads and in Suffolk County parks. Hundreds of Long Islanders from all ages and backgrounds demonstrated what it means to "go the extra mile" for their community.

The LI2Day Breast Cancer Walk celebrates its five-year milestone and the overall success of raising more than $1.4 million in just four years. This year LI2DAY has seen a record number of participants and hopes to raise $500,000 so more Long Islanders can receive the assistance they need with medical expenses, transportation, prosthetics and wigs, physical therapy and child care. While researchers forge ahead to determine why breast cancer rates are so high on Long Island and to find a cure, LI2DAY will continue to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the women and men in our community who are fighting breast cancer right now - emotionally, physically and financially. Ginny Salerno, executive director of LI2DAY proudly touts, "One hundred percent of the funds raised by our participants go directly to local grassroots breast cancer organizations, research and education. Together we are making a difference."

The 5th Annual Walk has already seen record-breaking numbers with over 400 enthusiastic walkers, nearly 450 volunteers and 120 breast cancer survivors. Salerno said, "LI2DAY has already received $361,615 in donations and we're still counting. She commended the walkers for their commitment, dedication and support of this year's event. Salerno added, "Even when confronted with the challenge of this year's weather conditions their perseverance, spirit, drive and courage remained undaunted throughout the weekend. More Long Islanders can receive assistance and support because of their unbelievable effort, strength and dedication to this initiative."

The LI2Day Walk is a community event like no other. Residents and businesses along the route set up makeshift rest stops and provided walkers with their hoses for a cool relief.
