Rosalyn Katz, of Arlington, VA, formerly of Great Neck, died of natural causes on April 23, 2008. She was 92 years old. She was born in the Bronx, the daughter of Samuel and Ethel Rossoff. After graduating from Hunter College in 1935, she became a gym and health education teacher in the New York City schools. Her first assignment was in Red Hook, Brooklyn. When she retired she had been at Francis Lewis Junior High School for many years. She was also gifted in many other fields, including modern dance, piano (and later the organ), French and Hebrew.

She and her husband, Jerome Katz, met playing handball at Castle Hill Pool in the Bronx. They married in 1940. He passed away in 2000, less than a month before what would have been their 60th wedding anniversary.

In 1953 the couple moved with their two young children from the Bronx to Great Neck. Ros became active in the Sisterhood at Great Neck's Temple Emanuel and taught Hebrew there.

In 1981 she joined Friends of the Helen Keller National Center in Sands Point and volunteered unstintingly. Applying her culinary expertise, she provided recipes for students entering independent living. She also learned to use a Braille typewriter and put countless materials into Braille over the years. In 2001 she received the center's Angel Award for 20 years of service.

She celebrated her 90th birthday in the house she loved for over half a century, then moved to Arlington to live with her son and daughter-in-law, Joel Katz and Mary Detweller.

She is also survived by her daughter Harriet Katz O'Brien of Los Angeles; her brother-in-law Irving Katz; sisters-in-law, Ruth Katz, Shirley Katz and Ethel Mae Rossoff; and many beloved nephews and nieces. The family will always cherish their memories of her warmth, whimsy, wit and wisdom.

Arrangements were made by Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. Funeral services were held April 25 at Temple Emanuel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Friends of the Helen Keller National Center, 141 Middle Neck Rd., Sands Point, NY 11050.
