For the first time since 1992, the Great Neck South Winter Track team won the Conference III Championship. On Feb. 4, the team topped second-place Mepham by a dominating margin of 34 points. There were a very large number of scoring competitors for the team, led by Terrance Livingston who alone scored 28 out of a possible 30 points. The team had 14 All-Conference performances, as well as Conference champions in four events.
At the County Championships, Great Neck South did well again, placing sixth overall in Nassau. Terrance Livingston was county champion in both the 600 and 1000 meters, a feat so rare that an article in Newsday quoted officials saying that it had not been done in 25 years. State Qualifiers was a very successful meet, with the 4x800 team winning their race and qualifying for states. Terrance Livingston also qualified for the State Championship in the 600-meter race.
At the State Championship, Livingston surprised many by winning the fastest heat of the 600, in which he hurdled another runner who had tripped and fallen directly in front of the lead pack. Livingston's time was slightly edged by one other runner in a slower heat, who may have benefited from avoiding sloppy situation caused by the fall in heat #1. The 4x800 team also placed in the top 10 in its event.
After the state meet, it was on to Nationals. The 4x800 team, consisting of Jordon Holtzman, Max Novitsky, Steve Lotti, and Pat Ambrosio went to Nike Indoor Nationals in Maryland along with Livingston who was to compete in the 400-meter race. Livingston's preliminary time was fourth among competitors, landing him a spot in the fastest heat of the finals. Unfortunately, Livingston was tripped up toward the beginning of the race. He finished fourth in that heat, but eighth in terms of overall time. He just barely missed a top six finish and All-American honors. While those five runners were in Maryland, the Great Neck South 4x55 meter hurdle relay team, or shuttle relay team, was in New York City competing in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. The team consisted of one student from each grade (from youngest to oldest): Sam Gold, Evan Auguste, Arnie Cooper, and Francis Morris. The team's race was successful, defeating several other teams. Overall, the winter season was one including much hard work on the part of the athletes, which led to many accomplishments.
The spring track season has already begun, and the first meet is the Bob Baratta Classic, named after long-time athletic director and legendary track coach at South High. The meet was scheduled at home on March 29. Approximately 22 teams and over 1,000 athletes were set to attend. Local schools present included Great Neck North, Manhasset, Port Washington, Herricks, Jericho, Roslyn, and others. Runners included all Nationalists previously mentioned, as well as several other exciting competitors in both track and field events.
