Great Neck South High School senior Ben Belmont and Great Neck North High School junior Sari Levy will be the 2008 recipient of "The Jules D. Mazor Outstanding Jewish Male Scholastic Athlete of the Year" and "The Pearl D. Mazor Outstanding Jewish Female Scholastic Athlete of the Year" respectively.
Ben is a three-sport standout at South: football, basketball and lacrosse. His best sport is lacrosse, where he has been a four-year starter and was All County honorable mention as a junior. In football Ben was given the most versatile player award and in basketball has been All Conference for three seasons. Ben will be attending Duke in the fall.
Sari Levy is an extremely accomplished fencer, winning a gold medal at the L.I. individual championship, women's epee, this year; a silver medal in the North Atlantic Section Jr. championship in '07; and a bronze medal in the '07 Pomme De Terre.
"We are thrilled to be recognizing the accomplishments of Sari and Ben," says Lynne Kramer, chairman of the hall of fame committee, "They are true scholar athletes."
The awards will be presented at the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum induction ceremonies on June 8 at 10:30 a.m. at the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center.
