On Nov. 4, 39,805 athletes from all over New York, the United States, and the world tested their endurance, resilience, and perseverance in the ING New York City Marathon, a tradition began in 1970.

Elisabeth Gomori

Great Neck's very own Dr. Elisabeth Gomori was among the runners, making her debut as a first-time marathon runner. She ran with over 800 Fred's Team members. Fred's Team, a charity begun in 1991 through Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), was inspired by NYC marathon founder, Fred Lebow, when he was treated at MSKCC. Dr. Gomori, recognized as a top fundraiser by Fred's Team, raised over $3500 dollars to be used towards cancer research in memory of her dear friend, Shalom Zelingher.

Dr. Gomori's determination to fundraise and train for this marathon makes her an inspirational role model to her daughters, her friends, and even her patients. Those of us lucky enough to see the smile on her face as she approached the finish line in Central Park know that every step was well worth it!
