While many public officials expressed disappointment that the land swap for the U.S. Postal Service annex did not occur in time to meet their deadlines, perhaps all is not lost.
Congressman Gary Ackerman, who advocated strongly on behalf of Great Neck's interests, has praised the postal authorities for their "refreshingly cooperative" stance on the matter.
It should be noted that we are in favor of our hard-working postal employees having a pleasant and efficient workspace for the vital service they perform in keeping our mail flowing smoothly and swiftly.
In light of the fact that the postal service has not actually begun construction, it would be a great bonanza if the postal annex building were situated so that the long-envisioned public path for walkers, runners and cyclists on the waterfront of Manhasset Bay could extend to the periphery of their property.
Even though the re-zoning of East Shore Road was not without its critics, there was a consensus at the numerous hearings that residents would like to see a public waterfront walkway surrounding Manhasset Bay for the enjoyment of all.
If the U.S. Postal Service would accommodate the community in this way, it would be a gift that would have a lasting legacy....for as long as we have the beautiful views of Manhasset Bay.
