On Saturday, Sept. 8, more than 400 student-athletes from Nassau County came together at Great Neck North High School to participate in the 5th Annual Joan Grunebaum Memorial Tournament. This field hockey event, sponsored by Long Island Field Hockey Association and the Nassau County Coaches Association, celebrates the memory of a beloved teacher/coach from North who passed away suddenly in September 2002.
Joan's passion for life also carried over to her community, as she was a longtime volunteer for the Great Neck Spirits - a chapter of the Long Island Special Olympics.
To honor and perpetuate Joan's memory, all of the money raised is donated to the Great Neck Special Olympians.
This year's proceeds of $6,400 brings the five-year total of charitable donations to just more than $27,000!
Special thanks to the many who helped make this day possible, as it truly takes "a community" of people all coming together to make this happen.
