Frieda Wenger died peacefully in her sleep on Aug. 15, 2007 at the age of 96. Frieda was born Frieda Smigrod on Nov. 29, 1910. She attended Alfred University from 1927 until 1931, where she met Samuel Wenger and then married him a semester before graduation. Under the rules of the school at that time, they could have been expelled had the marriage been discovered, but true love could no longer to denied. The marriage was kept secret even from family until years after a formal wedding was held.
In 1957, they moved to Kings Point, LI, to a dream house that used to be used as a stable. They lived in that house for the next 30 years, until Sam's retirement, when they moved to Litchfield, CT. While in King's Point, Frieda honed her skills as a wonderful wife and mother, a gourmet cook and a fine interior designer (ASID); as a result of her skills, the family's interesting, eclectic, antique-filled home was featured in the April 17, 1977, issue of House Beautiful.
Frieda and Sam's marriage lasted 74 years, ending with his death two years ago at the age of 96. She leaves behind her younger son and his wife, Tom and Deborah Wenger, a daughter, Jane Wenger, her companion, Richard Butler, an older son and his wife, John and Sally Wenger, four grandchildren, two great grand-children, and many friends. She was adored and will always be missed by all who knew her.
Edwin E. Epstein, 84, of Manhasset, died on Aug. 23, 2007, following an extended illness. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was a prominent consultant to the grocery trade for 25 years, representing such food manufacturers as The Coca-Cola Company and Quaker Oats and leading supermarket chains. He served as an advisor to senior management teams and as a mentor to countless young professionals throughout the industry. He co-founded the Buying Skills program at the University of Southern California, where he taught for many years as a guest lecturer. Previously, with his brother David, he founded the Double E grocery chain, which was ultimately acquired by Pueblo International. Epstein then served as president of this NYSE-listed company.
He grew up in Brooklyn. He served as a medic in the 99th Infantry Division in Germany during WW II and later graduated from New York University. He was honored numerous times for his philanthropy and served on the Auxiliary Board of North Shore University Hospital. A die-hard Jets fan and season ticket holder since 1961, his greatest joy was his family.
He is survived by Elaine, his wife of nearly 55 years, sister Thelma and brother David, children Alan and Nancy of Los Angeles, CA, (and their children Melissa, Adam and Alison), Susan and Dr. Alan Sosnay of Scarsdale, NY (and their children Daniel and Jonathan), Barry and Bonnie of Roslyn, NY (and their children Jacob, Benjamin and Sarah) and Stuart and Randi of New York City (and their children Jack, Martha, Joseph and Eliza).
The family would like to acknowledge the loving support of his wonderful caregivers, who were of great help during the final years of his life.
Edith S. Jackson Roesler, a resident of Narrowsburg, NY, passed away Aug. 28, 2007. The daughter of Herman and Josephine Scott, she was born Dec. 31, 1906 in New Haven, CT, where she lived until graduating from college to become a school teacher.
She was one of five children, predeceased by two sisters and one brother and her sister Mildred lives in Hampton, VA. She married Edwin Jackson and they made their home in Great Neck where they raised their two sons, Edwin and Scott.
After her husband's death she later married Walter Roesler and they resided in Great Neck as well. Upon his death she resumed work again at the Great Neck Park District and retired from there at the age of 88.
She sadly lost her son Scott 21 years ago in California. She is survived by her son Edwin Jackson (Chris), her sister Mildred; four grandchildren, Stacey, Elisa, Dianne and Rebecca; three great-grandchildren, Mihcael, Lisa and Jackson; and two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Kenny.
She was an amazing woman, loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her throughout her 100 plus years here in this life.
Funeral arrangements were made by Rasmussen's Funeral Home, Narrowsburg. Burial and graveside services All Saints Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan, 800 Stony Brook Ct., Newburgh, NY 12550. Her family is immensely grateful for the wonderful, loving care they gave her in this past Obituyear.
