The Village of Great Neck installed a new mayor, Ralph Kreitzman, on Tuesday evening, July 10. Even though Mayor Kreitzman officially took office on July 2, the swearing in ceremonies for the mayor and two trustees, Mitchell Beckerman and Jeffrey Bass, came at the opening of the village's July 10 board of trustees meeting.

Following the ceremonies and a reception hosted by the board, the mayor announced a long list of appointments, as is required at the village's annual meeting. The list included both existing spots that are up for reappointment and new positions. Topping the list was the appointment of Mr. Beckerman as deputy mayor. Deputy Mayor Beckerman, long active in village government, has been a trustee for six years. The position of deputy mayor is for a one-year term. Mr. Beckerman was also reappointed to the four-year balance of his term on the village's Housing Authority, where he serves as treasurer. He also continues to serve as chair of the village's Business and Commerce Committee.

Trustee Mark Birnbaum was reappointed village police commissioner, and was also given the new position of public safety commissioner. Mr. Birnbaum was also appointed as liaison to the village court and public safety liaison to the Great Neck Public Schools, and he continues to serve as chair of the village's Public Safety Committee.

Trustee Jeffrey Bass was appointed as liaison to the Planning Board and the Board of Appeals, and as well, the mayor appointed Trustee Bass as liaison to the Manhasset Bay Protection Commission.

Mayor Kreitzman, who became a director of the Water Authority of Great Neck North when he became mayor, will also serve as a member of the Alert LOSAP Board. Additionally, Mayor Kreitzman has been elected vice president of the Great Neck Village Officials Association.

Jerry Reisman was appointed for another one-year term as acting justice.

For the Board of Appeals, Nick Nabavian, formerly an alternate member of this board, was appointed for five years. Steve Markowitz was appointed as a BZA alternate; this is a one-year term.

Raymond Iryami was reappointed for a five-year term on the Planning Board. Bart Sobel, formerly an alternate, was also appointed to the Planning Board; his term is the three-year balance on an existing term of office.

The Architectural Review Committee received several appointments, including Trustee Edna Guilor-Segal reappointed for a one-year term, and also reappointed as committee chair. Others appointed to this committee for one-year terms include: DiDi Hutt, Carl Abraham (reappointment), Mark Schimel and Alan Sykoff (reappointment).

Elliot Rosenblatt will continue as the village's cable commissioner and PATC director. Mr. Rosenblatt was appointed for a one-year term.

Lenny Motchkavitz was appointed for another three years on the plumbers examining board.

Village Clerk/Treasurer John Dominsky was reappointed to fulfill several duties (assessor, one year; marriage officer, four years; ADA compliance officer, one year; budget officer, one year; purchasing officer, one year; record retention officer, one year), and Deputy Clerk Kathy King was reappointed for a one-year term. As well, Deputy Treasurer Terry Petroski was reappointed for another one-year term.

The mayor also made the following appointments: Norman Nemec, superintendent, building department; Michael Fowler, taxi inspector; Gary Arman, superintendent, Water Pollution Control District; Louis Massaro, superintendent, Department of Pubic Works and storm water manager; Phillip Cornell, deputy superintendent, Water Pollution Control District; and James Neubert, deputy superintendent, Department of Public Works.

The appointment of a deputy mayor is solely the mayor's appointment, as are trustee assignments. All other appointments require approval of the Board of Trustees.

A few committee positions are as yet vacant and it is anticipated that they will be filled in the near future.

The next Village of Great Neck Board of Trustees meeting is Tuesday, July 24, 7:30 p.m., Village Hall, 61 Baker Hill Road.
