Obituaries

Thomas Patrick Curry died on May 14, 2007 surrounded by his family. He was born in the Bronx on Sept. 21, 1932. His parents were Tom and Kathleen from County Cavan. Tom was a man of strong faith and courage through his entire life. He was an inspiration to his family through his courage and commitment. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lou (nee Doberstein ) kindergarten teacher at Lakeville school. Devoted father of Rev. Thomas, O.S.B., Mary Elizabeth Williams husband Tom and Kathleen Mangels and husband Jens. Cherished grandfather of Tommy and Colin Williams and Kaitlin, Ashley and Grace Mangels. He is also survived by his two sisters, Margaret of East Williston and Alice of Spokane,WA and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Jack and Marty.

Tom was a Korean veteran where he received the Bronze Star. Returning home, he joined the NYC Police Dept. He then went on to receive his B.A. and M.A. at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. In 1972, Tom was awarded the Medal of Honor due to line of duty injuries. His love of life and deep faith gave him the strength to combat the many challenges in his life.

An active man in St. Aloysius Parish in Great Neck, Tom was a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Charity Night journal committee, CYO sports program and the Bishop's Appeal Committee. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus- Daly Council where he attained honorary membership.

Tom was married to Mary Lou for 40 wonderful years. Their summers were spent at his favorite spot, Sabbath Day Point in Lake George. Tom watched his children and grandchildren thrive in the beauty and peacefulness of the mountains and waters of the Lake.

Arrangements were made by the Fairchild Funeral Home, Manhasset. Funeral Mass at St. Aloysius. Interment, Holy Rood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom's name to: PBA Widow and Children's Fund, 40 Fulton St., 17th floor, New York, NY 10038 or St. Vincent Archabbey Development Office, 300 Fraser Purchase Rd., Latrobe, PA 15650.

Wilma S. Blecher (nee Tashlick), a longtime resident of Great Neck, died on June 11, 2007. She was born on Jan. 21, 1915, daughter of the late Morris and Sarah Tashlick. Wife of the late Milton. Mother of Susan and Jane. Mother-in-law of Bill. Sister of Lillian. Arrangements were made by the Riverside-Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck. Services were held June 14 officiated by Rabbi Prouser. Interment New Montefiore Cemetery, St. Albans.
