On May 17 at the Village Club of Lake Success, the United Community Fund of Great Neck and North New Hyde Park will honor North Hempstead Town Councilwoman Lee Seeman for her outstanding service to the Great Neck peninsula.

Lee Seeman, a longtime resident of the Town of North Hempstead, is currently serving her first term as a councilwoman for the town. Elected on Nov. 8, 2005, she represents the communities of North New Hyde Park, Garden City Park, Floral Park and the villages of Saddle Rock, Great Neck Estates, Russell Gardens, University Gardens, Lake Success and other unincorporated areas.

Prior to becoming a councilwoman, Ms. Seeman has been an active member of the community. She has been the program director of the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce since 1975. She has promoted topics such as environmental conservation, health care, small business concerns, the economy of Long Island and computer science. She has brought guest speakers from all over the world including the Consul General of Cyprus and the Ambassador of Belize.

In 1995, Ms. Seeman was appointed by President William Jefferson Clinton, and later reappointed by President George W. Bush, as a member of the United State Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad. In this role she was instrumental in the establishment of one of the largest cemetery monuments in Poland, dedicated to those who perished in the Holocaust. Her present project has been the placing of markers at the sites of former slave labor camps in Estonia during World War II.

Ms. Seeman is a New York State Democratic committeewoman since 1970 and has served on the executive committee of the New York State Democratic committee. She is also serving on Congressman Ackerman's review board for students who apply to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, the Naval Academy, and West Point Academy.

In addition, Ms. Seeman is a member of such community groups as the League of Women Voters, the World Jewish Congress, Hadassah, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She is also an active member of Temple Beth El of Great Neck.

UCF is an umbrella organization that provides grants to agencies that provide direct services to the residents of Great Neck and North New Hyde Park. UCF's member agencies are: CLASP Children's Center, COPAY, Child Abuse Prevention Services, Great Neck Senior Center, Great Neck Student Aid Fund, Manhasset-Great Neck EOC, North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation, Visiting Nurse Association of Long Island, Open Door Parent-Child Caring Center, Sara's Center, North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, and The Salvation Army.

At the Gala Dinner, UCF will also honor Arlene Nevens, former director of the Great Neck Library, and the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce's "We Care Committee."
