VOA Hears from Fire Fighter Leaders
To illustrate the predicament of the fire departments in keeping their volunteers, Andrew DeMartin passed around a photograph of the Vigilant Fire Department members that was taken in 1979 and one that was taken in 2006. He told the assembled Great Neck leaders at the February 28 Village Officials Association (VOA) meeting that only three people were in both photos. While the most recent recruitment numbers have been high, he also reported that since 2000, the Vigilant Fire Company has lost 32 members due to their need to move away for affordable housing. He said, "We need our members to form deep roots in the community."

Status Report: Great Neck Library
Although it appeared at one point during the library board meeting on Feb. 26 that the committee assignments would be tabled until the March meeting, president David Kahn announced board member committee assignments after a recess. Trustee Martin Sokol's insistence on the urgency of making the appointments, especially to reactivate the building committee, proved to be prescient.

Swimmers Earn Bid to National Championships
There was a lasting sense of enthusiasm and excitement buzzing around the Athletic department after hearing last night that six Midshipman from the Mariner Swimming program have been given the nod to compete in the NCAA Division III National Swimming Championships March 15-17 at the University of Houston.
