The Great Neck Record would once again like to make it clear that, when it comes to local elections, the newspaper does not address any such elections until about a month before the election date --- when all petitions for candidates are due.
We will not accept campaign announcements, letters to the editor, nor any stories relating to the local election until 5 p.m. on the day that the involved municipality requires all candidate petitions be submitted. Generally, this applies to our nine villages, our special districts (park district, water districts, sewer districts, etc.), the library board and the school board.
In each case, the day after petitions are due, the Record calls each municipality and asks for a list of all candidates, opposed and unopposed. Each candidate, opposed or unopposed, is then given the option of submitting a photo (headshot) and a short statement which includes a biography and reasons why this candidate is running.
From there, we cover pertinent debates (especially those sponsored by the League of Women Voters) and often propose questions to the candidates, with the questions and answers printed in the Record.
Readers can be certain that all elections are fully covered by the Great Neck Record, with the most fair and complete process.
