On Feb. 11, 2007, Al Udow died peacefully at home in Ann Arbor, MI. The cause of death was a stroke. Al had recently moved to Ann Arbor from Great Neck to be close to his daughter, Marianne, after the death of his beloved wife. Al was born in Winnipeg, Canada on May 4, 1917. He moved to Montreal to attend McGill University, where he earned a bachelor's and master's degree. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1942 from Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. After serving in the Army as a clinical psychologist headquartered at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Fort Benjamin, Indiana, Al began a long career in advertising, marketing and consumer research. Most notably, he worked at Foote Cone & Belding, Ted Bates, Lennen and Newell and Altria. He retired from Altria (then, Philip Morris) in 1984. Al met and married Rosalyn Long in 1951 after a six week courtship. They moved from New York City to Great Neck in 1952, where they had two children, Marianne and Hank. Al lived in Great Neck from 1952 until 2006. Throughout his life, Al was active in many political, educational and community organizations. He was a committed supporter of Columbia University throughout his life. From 1977-1979 he served as president of Columbia's Alumni Federation. In Great Neck, he was a major fundraiser and leader in the United Community Fund. From 1982 through 2006, he was a member of the Academy for Retired Executives and Professionals (REAP II) and served in many roles, including president in 1991. He also served as an arbitrator for the State of New York. He was active in supporting the needs of Great Neck's Senior Citizens, serving as a member of the Great Neck Housing Authority from 1988 through 2001, and its chair from 1995-2001. He was also elected a trustee of the Village of Great Neck, serving two terms between 1993 and 1997, and was appointed Deputy Mayor from 1996-1997. Finally, he was a member of the library board and a volunteer in the Nassau County Police Reservist Association. In addition to all of his own achievements and public service, throughout their 54 years of marriage, Al was a dedicated partner and major supporter of his wife, Roz. From his work on her political campaigns to his support of her art and human rights causes, Al was an early and sustained feminist. In addition to Marianne and her family in Ann Arbor, and a sister in Kansas City, MO, Al leaves behind his son, Hank, daughter-in-law, Gina, and grandchildren, Erica, Hilary and Jonathan, in London, England.
