With three wins last week, the St. Aloysius Panthers completed the regular season in the CYO of Nassau and Suffolk Counties Fifth Grade Basketball Division with a 10-1 record.

After one-point loss in the opening game of the season, to unbeaten St. Catherine's of Franklin Square, the team has reeled off 10 straight victories and has its sights set on the upcoming playoffs.

During the winning streak, Coach Ray Rovegno's team has outscored its opponents by an average of 15 points per game with only one win coming by a margin of less than 10 points. Over the past week, the team has defeated St. Anne's of Garden City 46-20, St. Raymond's of East Rockaway 41-34 and St. Aidan's of Williston Park 40-22.

The team's high scoring offense is triggered by the point guard tandem of Brett Alper and Sam Weinbaum and is fueled by leading scorers Dylan Forrester and Gil Weiss. Despite their high scoring ways, the team plays a stifling brand of defense which is anchored by the interior work of Marc Giovanello, Josh Moinian, Michael Sitzer and Shane Smith and the relentless ball hawking skills of Jack Kimmel and Vinny Patrey. The remaining reserves, Griffin Adwar, Glenn Forstner, James Kennedy and Connor O'Byrne have also played key roles in the team's impressive march through Division play.

The upcoming playoffs will present new challenges for the local youths who will face stiff competition from across Long Island. However, the team's competitive spirit has it relishing the opportunity to bring home a championship to Great Neck.
