Sophomore Kristen Hetsko scored a career high of 30 points in the United States Merchant Marine women's basketball team's 67-62 overtime loss to New York City Technology.
Shooting 9-for-11 from behind the three-point arc and 10-for-16 from the floor, Kristen Hetsko accounted for half the Mariner points in the Wednesday, Dec. 13 outing.
With the loss, the Mariners fall to 5-3 overall, while the Yellow Jackets advance to 6-4.
Starting out close, the Yellow Jackets took early control of the game. At 15:13, Hetsko dropped in a 3 assisted by freshman Brooke Picillo to tie the score at 7.
The Yellow Jackets took advantage of the Mariners' scoring freeze and went on a six-minute 14-0 run to take a solid 11-point lead. A free throw from Hannah Eko broke the scoring run and helped the Mariners make some points up in the waning five minutes of the half with back-to-back 3s from Hetsko and Stephanie Waller to bring the lead down to 6.
A last minute four-point play by Hetsko with nine seconds left to play slimmed the deficit down to 4 as the Mariners went into the locker rooms for the half, down 29-25.
The second half was much the same as the first with the lead staying to within 10 points and the lead changing hands. With 29 seconds to go, a free-throw shot by Dyshea Smiley gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-point advantage.
Smiley's second free throw missed its mark, and Hetsko was there to grab possession.
Hetsko gave control of the ball to Picillo who dropped in a literal last second 3-pointer to send the game into overtime.
Denise Diego of City Tech scored the first overtime points with a layup assisted by Smiley.
The Mariners took the lead away with a made 3 from Hetsko.
The Yellow Jackets answered back with a made layup by Mareena Creary. City Tech went on to score on 5 of 11 attempts, including free throws, to secure a 67-62 overtime victory.
Picillo was second in scoring for the Mariners with nine points. Sophomore Hannah Eko pulled down a team high of 10 boards.
For the Yellow Jackets, Kemi Owoseni scored a team high of 20 points, while Amanda Zieminksi was second with 15.
Smiley had a double-double for the Yellow Jackets with 11 points, 21 rebounds, 15 being defensive.
