For their eighth consecutive season, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming and diving program outswam their Skyline competition and walked away with the conference title.

Scoring 210 points, the Mariner men broke six Skyline conference records at the Skyline Conference Championships, recently at O'Hara Pool.

The USMMA men's swimming and diving team.

"The men's team stepped up and swam fast today," remarked Male Head Coach of the Year, Sean Tedesco. "I was impressed with our freshmen, especially Stephen Ingvoldstad and Scott Heilman."

Ingvoldstad earned Skyline Rookie of the Year honors, earning 16 points for the Mariners, the third highest in the Mariner roster. Heilman earned 14 points and tied for sixth in male individual scores for the entire meet.

Involdstad finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (48.82), second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.86), and third in the 50-yard butterfly (24.97).

The freshman was also part of the record breaking 200-yard freestyle relay. Along with senior William Ansell, Heilman and junior Matt Ellison, the Mariners broke the two-year old record by 35 tenths of a second.

Junior Jay Carpenter tied with the Skyline Swimmer of the Year, Yury Zimarev, from Old Westbury with 21 points. Carpenter won three individual events, breaking three conference records, as well as being part of the record breaking 200-yard Medley Relay, with sophomore Scott Pearson, senior Jesse Bowser and Ellison. Carpenter broke the record for the 50-yard and 100-yard breaststroke events as well as the 100-yard IM. Last season, Carpenter finished third at the NCAA Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke event.

Pearson also finished well for the Mariners, breaking his own conference record, which he set last year in the 50-yard backstroke. He also swam as the lead swimmer in the record breaking 200-yard Medley Relay.

Other event winners include: David Scarberry in the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.80) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.25) and Mickey Hand in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. Hand won Diver of the Year for the men.

Mariner diving coach, Kevin Ryan walked away with Diving Coach of the Year honors.

Although they did not win a race, Ansell, Bowser and Heilman had an excellent championship, helping earn points for the Mariners.

In team scores, Stevens Institute of Technology came in second with 51 points, Maritime followed with 38 points and Old Westbury and Mount Saint Mary College rounded out the bottom two.
