The Great Neck Road Runners lost last Sunday's match against unbeaten Mineola in a 3-2 game, but much to blame for the disappointment of the game was the winds that swirled up to 40 mph, inevitably affecting both teams.
Mineola took the early lead by 1-0. However, Edmond Sassoon got the game even shortly thereafter with some remarkable moves in the midfield getting the ball past the Mineola players, which gave him a clear shot that went past the keeper. With the winds twirling in an unusual pattern, the Road Runners let up two bizarre goals. The wind changed directions and both times, the defense and the keeper did not read it well, thus leaving them down by 2 at half time.
During the second half, right midfielder A.J. Hendler worked the ball free from a Mineola forward, allowing the ball to land on Andrew Brash's feet, who made a stunning pass to Adam Warner, who flicked the ball to Edmond Sassoon, who sent a rocket (well not really with the wind) pass the Mineola keeper, bringing the score to 3-2. With less than three minutes in the game, as Andrew Brash was dashing around the right end of the keeper box he was tripped, giving the Road Runners a much needed penalty shot.
Everyone's hands were clutched as they watched Edmond Sassoon's penalty kick hit the cross over. A few more chances saw Eric Weinstein's kick from outside the box sail a few feet over the cross bar and A.J. Hendler was just inches away from out pacing the Mineola' keeper in an attempt to even the score.
The Road Runners (Andrew Brash, Daniel Belmont, Jordan Friedman, Jake Goodstein, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Adam Gottlieb, A.J. Hendler, Angad Ishar, Matt Mueller, Andrew Nikolai, Matias Quarleri, Jonathan Robeny, Edmond Sassoon, Alex Schifter, Adam Warner, and Eric Weinstein) and their proud parents were more than pleased of their work ethic. The kids continually show guts and determination, although lately they keep coming up one goal short.
